Games & other media

Please save April 27th at 4 pm for a virtual talk by Warren Spector entitled “Games and other media.” Warren will touch on the ways in which games are like and not like movies, television, books and other traditional media. In addition, he will discuss what games can, can’t and shouldn’t take away from those media. This talk is presented by the WPI IMGD Celebrity Series, MassDigi, IGDA WPI and DiG WPI.

Warren Spector has been making games for almost 40 years. and is best known for his work on the Ultima, Deus Ex and Disney Epic Mickey games. He began his career in 1983 in tabletop games with Steve Jackson Games and TSR before moving into electronic games in 1989. He worked at Origin, Electronic Arts, Looking Glass, Ion Storm and Eidos before starting Junction Point Studios, and indie developer acquired in 2007 by the Walt Disney Company. In addition to his game work, he is a published novelist (The Hollow Earth Affair, 1988) and comic book author (DuckTales: Rightful Owners, 2012). From 2013 to 2016 he was Director of the Denius-Sams Gaming Academy in the Moody College of Communication at The University of Texas at Austin. In 2011 he was awarded an Honorary Doctorate by Columbia College of Chicago as well as the Game Developers Choice Lifetime Achievement award Conference. In 2016 he received the Honorary Award for Lifetime Achievement from the Fun and Serious Games Conference. That same year, he partnered with Paul Neurath in the creation of Mass.-based indie developer OtherSide Entertainment where he is working on a new, original game.
